Most people believe that the harder they work, the more productive their day will be. While that may be true on some occasions, men and women often dedicate too much time to personalized tasks. There’s nothing wrong with working hard but it’s a lot better if you know how to work smart.
Importance of Working Smarter
Researchers state that working longer hours does not necessarily lead to better work. The relationship of hours worked and the output gets positive at a certain point but drastically lands as time goes on. Whether you agree or not, your human capacity has its limitations when it comes to working.
Working smart helps you avoid burnout, which makes you ineffective and less productive as your day comes to an end. Your goal is to accomplish a lot in your career and, at the same time, leave enough room for you to do the things you love.
Best Ways to Work Smarter Not Harder
When you become so focused on the things you do, you’ll be surprised that you have accomplished much. Something that should’ve taken you an entire day to finish can be done only in a couple of hours when you concentrate and minimize distractions.
The more you take time to be sensitive about these short bursts of productivity, the more you’ve realized that you worked smarter, not harder. Putting your health on watch constantly, planning out your work, and trying new approaches can make you more productive.
Plan Ahead of Time
It’s always good to plan. But some people are unable to do so because of various reasons. There are certain benefits of winging your plan before tomorrow which could help you be more fruitful.
Stress comes when you don’t plan at all. You might’ve spent more on something, forgot to do something, or missed a deadline. You usually spend your life this way, but with some adequate planning, you can hugely reduce the level of stress in your life. Apply the 80/20 Principle
When it comes to time management and being productive, the Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, is often disregarded. However, successful companies and business people use this method to help them most of their time. It says that 80% of your results will come from 20% of your actions. This means that by just doing 20% of your tasks you can ensure an enormous outcome of 80%.
You can apply it to your to-do list as you prioritize things that will have a significant impact on your life first. It’s simply maximizing your productivity by doing less. A reduced to-do list is less daunting and more attainable for you. There’s nothing wrong with a small to-do list, plot your top 20% priority and expect an 80% outcome.
Remember that new tasks and responsibilities can come at any moment. To work smarter is to batch similar assignments together into smaller chunks, so when unexpected calls, emails, or meetings come, you’ll have spare time doing smaller things. Knocking out a bunch of minor tasks can help you be more productive because you’re not alternating between different sorts of work.
Relaxing and social breaks are found to be beneficial in maintaining your efficiency throughout the day. It helps return your mental and physiological systems to their coolest levels. Additionally, it can help sharpen your focus and boost your energy, thus promoting constructive wellbeing and productive work. Be careful of taking too much break though as it can take your precious time quickly.
Cut off distractions
It’s imperative that you’re able to focus on your work. Try cutting off too many distractions to prevent you from landing out of focus. You’ll be able to give all your energy to that task, ensuring you do the best you can do. Following tricks might put you into fewer distractions:
Turn off notifications. Close your emails and tabs, or turn your mobile device to silent mode. Figure out needed notifications, and separate them.
Keep track of your behavior to see if you’ve entertained fewer distractions.
